Slaughterhouse Sets Release Date for Self-Titled Debut

Slaughterhouse Sets Release Date for Self-Titled Debut

slaughterhouse2The Hip-Hop super group Slaughterhouse is set to release the highly publicized and talked about debut album, Slaughterhouse, on July 7, 2009, on E1 Music. Slaughterhouse is comprised of Joell Ortiz, Royce Da 5′9″, Joe Budden and Crooked I.

The group came together only 10 short months ago when Joe Budden was working on a song for his Halfway House album and enlisted the services of Crooked I, Joell Ortiz and Royce Da 5′9″ for a song called “Slaughterhouse.” Inspired by the vibe of track and the immediate chemistry of the four rappers, a plan was immediately made to form the super-group.  Several songs and a handful of viral videos later only created increased demand and curiosity from fans. Hip-hop heads demanded to hear more! And now they’ll be able to. – Press Release

The album will feature production by The Alchemist, Street runner, DJ Kalil and Denaun Porter.

”This group is really something special and this summer I’m excited to show the world what we have to offer! If you thought that we were just gonna release a few tracks to the net and then disappear you are in for a very rude awakening.” – Royce Da 5′9

”We did an entire album in 6 days!  When you genuinely love what you’re doing everything is effortless. It was like a long party.  I can’t wait for the fans to experience this album.” – Joell Ortiz

Feature Mixtape Download: Apply Pressure – Cassidy (DJ THORO, BIG MIKE, hosted by CARMELO ANTHONY)

Feature Mixtape Download: Apply Pressure – Cassidy (DJ THORO, BIG MIKE, hosted by CARMELO ANTHONY)

Fans who copped Cass’ latest effort, B.A.R.S., know he took it down a notch. Musically? It was a beautiful album. Dude went through a lot prior to recording (car accident, court cassidy-apply-pressure-450x450cases), and as a result, he put his heart on those songs (similar vibe to TI’s Papertrail). But for those of us who enjoy Cassidy at his most disrespectful, shit was kind of sweet.

Well, if BARS was a breath of fresh air, this mixtape is city smog.

Subjects don’t vary much on this one. Guns, drugs and material things. On the real though, it’s not about what he spits about. It’s how he spits it. Like on “Mine is on me”, he says “my garage remind me of a polo outlet/ cuz the ferraris and the porsche is gorgeous/ cuz they sit real low and got a whole lot of horses”. That’s commitment to a line and making it work. Also, his style hasn’t lost any of its obnoxiousness. Dude sounds like he can’t go in the booth without sneering at whoever.

Judging by the instrumentals, he clearly has his ear to the street. He uses tracks like Jim Jones’ “Na Nananana” and Ron Browz “Jumpin Out The Window” to deliver lyrical lashings on that John Doe emcee he’s getting at. He even goes in on Kanye’s “Heartless”, singing horribly but making up for it with a raw street tale.

The stand out track has got to be “Dear Rodney”. When Cassidy goes into battle mode, It ain’t a pretty sight. The victim this time is ex-Larsiny family member Akbar, so Cass has even more dirt to work with. A great way to end the mixtape. A great way to apply pressure on the game. The problem, the hustla, whatever he’s going by these days, is officially back.

Feauture Mixtape Download: "Joell Ortiz Covers the Classics"

Feauture Mixtape Download: "Joell Ortiz Covers the Classics"

joellclassicsFirst of all, props go to Ortiz. Even attempting to cover the classics is ambitious. The time spans from the beginning (Sugar Hill Gang) to the early 2000’s (Dead Prez). In terms of location, the majority of the tracks are NYC favorites, but Ortiz does his best to diversify by spitting over Goodie Mob on “Cell Therapies” and 2Pac’s “Got My Mind Made Up”. Subjects are just as diverse. He writes his first rhyme on “Just to Get a Check” (Gangstarr), flips the industry the bird on “Industry Enemy #1 (Public Enemy), but mostly he pays homage to the artists who paved the way on tracks like “T.R.O.Y.” (Pete Rock & CL Smooth) and “Primo Tribute” (Royce 5 9).

The conceptual tracks are where Joell snags the most shine. He gives the ‘ghetto love story’ on “Renee’s Revenge” (Lost Boyz) his own twist, turning it into a story about a flunky drug dealer. On “Rican Ebonics ‘09″, he flips Big L’s ghetto Merriam-Webster masterpiece and updates it with three verses of slang from today. Again, ambitious. But, the best example is the hilariously ig’nant “BK Get Money” (Notorious BIG). He raps about pissing in public, scavenging on blunts and basically being on that Brooklyn bullshit. It’s a track that would make Biggie proud.

With this mixtape, it’s clear that Joell Ortiz is a genuine fan and student of hip hop. Now it’s up to him to create some certified classics of his own. We’ll see when The Free Agent album drops.
