Michael Jackson was the greatest to ever do it. Singing, writing, dancing, you name it. He was the ultimate artist and every musical genre feels the tremendous loss that came with his sudden passing. Hip hop is no different.
Some critics in the blogosphere have speculated that some DJ’s are trying to ride the MJ wave for publicity. We gave DJ’s the benefit of the doubt and heard a bunch of the tribute
mixtapes. One of the best we’ve come across is Mick Boogie’s Michael Jackson: Remixed.
It’s not a rushed batch of blends and remixes. Mick Boogie says it’s not even a tribute, just a collection of his “favorite MJ remixes that we spin when we are doing our globe-trotting/playing-music thing”. Well, whatever it is, it bumps.
Many of the remixes are done by equally great artists from different genres such as Daft Punk (“Rock with You”) and the late great Dilla (“HIStory”). Other gems include a rare demo version of “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” and even the Simpsons Michael Jackson special “Happy Birthday Lisa” (you never expected this song to make you want to cry like it does).
The best moments in the mix are Telemitry and Bird Peterson’s remixes of Jackson’s biggest hits (“Thriller” and “Smooth Criminal”). They are completely re-imagined and given a dominantly electro twist. It’s the perfect example of great art inspiring more great art. That’s what the King of Pop did.
As the weeks go by, prepare to be swamped with more Michael Jackson tributes. Don’t be so quick to judge where the motive is coming from because we can only speculate. Dude had millions of fans, especially on the music producing side of things. At the same time, let’s not get it twisted, if you’re going to do the tribute, do it right.
Or you can just play the Michael Jackson: Remixed along with his original discography.
