Mase is still trying to find himself in his mid-30’s. The man cannot seem to figure out whether he wants to be a rapper or put on a robe for the Lord. He announces his third comeback with the mixtape I Do the Impossible.Listening to Pastor Mason Betha rap to women and boast on tracks is always an awkward experience. If you can somehow manage to force a memory lapse, forget the awkward stages (Pastor slash Rapper Mase, G-Unit’s Murda Mase), pretend Bad Boy Ma$e took a break and you’re listening to his first comeback, you’ll realize why the Harlemite used to be Kanye’s favorite rapper.

When he first popped up a few weeks back with his remix to Drake’s “Best I Ever Had”, he reportedly asked somebody what was hot and wrote over it. He employs the same method here, rocking over flavor-of-the-month-beats like “Empire State of Mind” and “Buy U A Round”. For the most part, he reminds fans he can deliver that Harlem swagger whether it’s a street anthem or a song for the ladies.

Surprisingly enough, Mase shines brightest on one of the only ‘Christian’ records on the mixtape. Mase spits from the perspective of God on “Listen Close”, with lines like “try to absorb this, you take every man on your forbes list, multiply ‘em, still couldn’t match my mortgage”. There’s no shame in doing Gospel raps if you can deliver witty lines and make good music. Too bad he’s still trying to figure himself out, so there will always be something to say about him.

With his tarnished reputation and ambiguous career decisions, it may be impossible to become the star he once was. But if anybody gives this mixtape a chance, he will most likely have gained back a fan. Good mixtape title.
