Hundreds of mixtapes came out this year, literally. Here is HHLO’s list of the mixtapes that mattered most this year. Of course, you’re going to disagree and we’re not going to be able to get to every mixtape. But at the end of the day, you’re wrong and we’re right. HA!
10. NICKI MINAJ – BEAM ME UP SCOTTY
You can say what you want about her barbie fan base, her ‘annoying’ voice, but you can’t deny that hunger on the mic. The new queen of rap? Just might be.
9. FASHAWN – ANTIDOTE
Long gone are the days when you could say there are no lyricists in Cali. With original production from Alchemist, this mixtape is a classic.
8. JOELL ORTIZ – COVERS THE CLASSICS
Nowadays, you can’t just rap over any hip hop classic without looking foolish. With the kind of 16’s this man is spitting, Joell can do anything he wants.
7. LIL WAYNE – NO CEILINGS
Weezy, Weezy, Weezy. He’s everywhere. But don’t sleep. Take away all the money and the fame and you have a guy who loves to emcee.
6. CAM’RON – BOSS OF ALL BOSSES
Cam and his new right hand man Vado hock a loogie on the game with some of the most ig’nant lyrics and epic production. I know you ain’t sleepin’ on the king of Harlem.
5. J COLE – THE WARM UP
If J Cole is only getting warmed up on this mixtape, expect problems. The RocNation artist shows his range and skill.
4. DRAKE – SO FAR GONE
It’s easy to hate on whoever’s on top, but there’s no denying the fact that the kid got skills. Whether he was crooning or rapping, he put the heart into it. Hate to point out sales, but numbers don’t lie.
3. JADAKISS – KISS MY ASS
Say what you will about the album, this mixtape had a lot of rappers shook. Damn near every bar is a quotable. “Kiss is the corner stone of the corner store.”
2. 50 CENT – WAR ANGEL
50 Cent, is that you?! We haven’t seen this bad guy in a long time ever since he went the R & B route. This precursor to the disrespectful Before I Self Destruct album almost makes us forget everything after Get Rich or Die Trying.
1. SEAN PRICE – KIMBO PRICE
Try listening to this mixtape without blood spilling out of your nose from the raw entering your ears. MegaSean never disappoints. If you complained about hip hop in 2009, you obviously haven’t been fuckin with that Boot Camp / Duck Down – pardon me, Ruck Down shit. P!

What no Young Chris “The Network”??? No CamRon “Boss of All Bosses”???? I don’t know bout that Niki Minaj joint. Her voice is too annoying for a whole mixtape. Most of these other joints are cool though. I actually rocked out to most of these.
Oops I didn’t mean Cam’s joint cuz that’s on the list. I meant to write J. Cole the “Come Up.” It was actually better than the “Warm Up”
And Lloyd Banks “PLK” mixtapes. Who didn’t do they homework??!!!!
I actually didn’t get a chance to listen to the Young Chris and Lloyd Banks stuff. There was way too many joints that came out. Nicki Minaj is dope.
