Just Words With Jen: The Return of West Coast Rap?
Mixtapes…hate ‘em or love ‘em there a part of Hip-Hop till the day it dies. But that’s not what this blog is about…it’s about my new found appreciation for 40 Glocc and the rebirth of my love for West Coast rap.
I’m going to tell you the truth, for a while, I lost my interest in West Coast rap. I have no idea why, but my interest was piqued again when Ei8ht interviewed Spider Loc and 40 Glocc around the time the site first launched. So I visited 40’s MySpace a month ago, and fell in love with the cut, Grindin’, which to me is reminiscent of the Pac era. Beat was sick, lyrically Glocc was on point, and most of all the song spoke to me. The track kicks off with a classic Biggie line, “How many shots does it take, to make my heart stop and my body start to shake”, and it continued to captivate me with the hook.
So we got the press release on Sunday night about the “I Am Legend” mixtape dropping yesterday. And like many others…I was on 40 Glocc’s website, waiting for it to drop. The online chat, was blowing up with people wondering what was going on, it was supposed to drop at 6PM, didn’t drop till 10:30PM. So guess who’s got a new mixtape to listen to, that I’m actually damn excited to hear! I’ll let you know, what I think later. But for now, I give Grindin’ 2 thumbs up… (now if G-Unit could only start including 40 and Spider in more of their mixtapes).
This leaves me wondering is the return of West Coast rap upon us? I have a list of artists from the West that I have to still purchase these albums, but I’ll tell you this, if they keep bringing it the return of the West Coast is definitely working in me, like the Spirit trying to work in a lady in church on Sunday!
And with that…I’m out!
