Just Words with Jen: Your Opinion…What’s Real Hip Hop?

What is real Hip-Hop? I found myself asking that question last week, as I read comments left by the visitors on Allhiphop.com and Hiphopdx.com, and wondered if any of those people are right. You see the haters, and the fans of an artist, hating, and talking about how the East fell off, or a certain artist isn’t Hip-Hop, and it makes me want to compare this to going to RollingStone.com, and reading the comments on an interview with Coldplay or the Foo Fighters, and you don’t see people saying “That’s not real Rock ‘n Roll.

So I wanted to get peoples opinions on what is real Hip Hop, everyone has their own opinion. I’d like to open up the comments, and let everyone let their voice be heard. Please limit the hating on artists, or East/South/West/Midwest battling. I’d like to see what you got on your mind.

Peace,

Jen

  1. Hey Jen:

Great question. I think if you spit bars over beats, its hip-hop. Period. The thing I love about this thing called hip-hop is that it has so many layers and so many styles. All of them are valid.

Some rappers move the genre forward, some do not. Look here - like many, I think Soulja Boy is garbage. But I don’t question his right to put out records or mixtapes. And like it or not, this man changed the game throught his online and ringtone hustle. So I give the man his due. And yes, Soulja Boy is hip-hop.

If you are rapping over a beat, its hip-hop. We can debate the quality of the lyrics, the flow, the originality, etc. We can argue all day about who’s the best MC: Biggie, Jay-Z or Nas. We can question whether a beat is hot.

    But its all hip-hop.

I feel you on that Soulja Boy comment, if you read my first blog, I touch on that. And you’re right, I wish at 7 in the morning I could really say what I need to say but the coffee hasn’t quite kicked in yet.

Thanks for stopping thru the site!

    Jen
