Hip Hop pioneer Melvin Bliss dies

Hip Hop pioneer Melvin Bliss dies

By Krysta Rayford

Shockwaves resonated through music blogs today with news surrounding the death of funk and R&B pioneer, Melvin Bliss. The creator of arguably one of the most recognizable samples in Hip Hop, Bliss was believed to be 75 years old and living in New York City at the time of his death.

Bliss’ 1973 classic “Synthetic Substitution” became iconic within the Hip Hop community. An unassuming B-side to a seven-inch recording of “Reward”, the song was sung by Bliss and featured percussion from legendary funk drummer Bernard Purdie. In time, Purdie’s drum sample would become one of the most sampled drum breaks in the history of Hip Hop. From Wu-Tang Clan’s “Bring Da Ruckus’”, to Naughty By Nature’s “O.P.P.”, to “Ego Trippin’” by Ultramagnetic MC’s, Bliss’ music provided various rap artists with an influential foundation for decades to come.

A documentary on the life of Melvin Bliss and his famous recording, Synthetic Substitution, was filmed in 2010.

Rapper DMC Bestows ‘Jam Master’ Title Upon DJ Scratch

(AllHipHop News) Legendary DJ Scratch has revealed to AllHipHop.com that he will change his well known moniker to DJ Jam Master Scratch, with the support of founding Run-DMC member, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels.

As DJ Scratch, the veteran turntablist/producer has worked with EPMD, DMX, Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes and 50 Cent.

In 1988 Run-DMC helped Scratch gain entry into the music business as the DJ for their “Run’s House World Tour.”

In 1988 on the tour, Scratch befriended Jam Master Jay, who recommended him to rap group EPMD. Scratch has been with EPMD ever since, in addition to becoming a world renowned battle DJ and producer.

At 8:00 PM, Jam Master Scratch will air footage of DMC proclaiming him the next official “Jam Master.”

“I dropped so many tears about this,” Jam Master Scratch told AllHipHop.com. “Me being recognized for my 22 years of work by a king [DMC], is my ‘Lifetime Achievement Award.’”

Jam Master Jay was gunned down in his Hollis, Queens recording studio on October 30, 2002. The legendary DJ’s murder still remains unsolved.

“I will continue to represent JMJ. Only practice makes a real Jam Master,” Jam Master Scratch said, quoting the song “Jam Master Jay,” Run-DMC’s familiar ode to the late DJ.

Man Acquitted Of Murdering Rapper Dolla

The man accused of shooting and killing rising rapper Dolla was acquitted of murder charges yesterday (May 22) in a

Doe Dolla

Los Angeles courtroom.

A jury acquitted Aubrey Berry, 24, of the charges after less than two days of deliberating and nine days of testimony, which saw Berry take the stand in his own defense.

Berry claimed that he was involved in an altercation with Dolla in a club in Atlanta a week prior to the shooting, which took place last May, near a valet section at the Beverly Center.

He testified that he researched the rapper online and read his violent lyrics. He also found clips of Dolla and other gang members bragging about assaulting another man.

Berry, who had a permit to carry his gun in other states,  testified he traveled to Los Angeles often and was always armed, although he didn’t realize his permit was not valid in California.

Berry said Dolla threatened to kill him during the chance encounter at the Beverly Center.

Dolla, 21, was an artist signed to Akon’s Konvict Muzik. He was shot three times in the back, as he attempted to flee Berry’s gunfire.

“Obviously, what happened on May 18, 2009, was a horrible tragedy for everyone,” Superior Court Judge Michael E. Pastor told the lawyers in court. “The jurors have spoken.”

Jurors may have been influenced by Dolla’s own rap lyrics, said Deputy District Attorney Bobby Grace.

“You’d hate to think that was the tipping point,” Grace told The Los Angeles Times out front of court.

Dolla’s mother was taken from the courtroom due to her emotional reaction to the verdict.
