Feature Mixtape: Lil Wayne “No Ceilings”

When Jay-z said, “I might give this to the Mixtape Weezy” on his single “D.O.A” he meant the guy rapping on the No Ceilings Mixtape.

No matter how much you hate on Lil Wayne, you can’t deny the fact that he goes in on tracks. He’s the only emcee that gets a pass for a mediocre punchline like ” I’m more dangerous than internet dating” because he keeps attacking with more and more jabs and eventually one of them lands, then another and another. Then you remember its not a hungry contender you’re tuning into but the reigning champ who’s already sold more records as a kid than most rappers in their lifetime. But that’s the Mixtape Weezy, the multi-platinum artist who still feels the need to prove himself on classic street bangers like “Banned From TV”. Hate it or love it, that’s kinda ill.

The Mixtape alter ego is unconcerned with radio play. Songs like “Mrs. Officer” on Carter III are replaced with songs like “Single”. Ya’ll remember when he raps about falling in love with the trampiest hoo-er on “Prostitute Flange”? Expect more of the same here, complete with suicidal tones, sparse drum, and too-real-for-TV lyrics. The last big distinction is the swag is turned up another notch, sometimes completely replacing effort like on “That’s All I Have”. He starts off by declaring his distaste for the beat and then moseys around the track with the laziest flow. Depending on your perspective this will either earn him points or anger serious listeners. To the latter, I say ‘lighten up’ the mixtape is called No Ceilings!

Young Money fans will be pleased to know that features include Nicki Minaj, Jae Millz, Tyga, and Gudda Gudda. Might be a little disappointed at the absence of Drake, but that guy really doesn’t need any more help from Dwayne.
