Havoc Sits Down with Ei8ht
With the release of Prodigy’s new HNIC pt 2 album set for this Tuesday April 22,2008, HHLO’s own Ei8ht caught up with Havoc, the other half of Mobb Deep, to talk about the new Prodigy album, his relationship with G-Unit, Havoc’s solo career and more.
HHLO: So what was your role on the HNIC pt 2 project? On the first one I know your role was kind of limited. I don’t know whether you intentionally stayed away or what the situation was, but what was your role on this project?
Havoc: On this project I just did two tracks.
HHLO: Aight, what was the name of the joints that you produced?
Havoc: One of them was Marshal Field (Field Marshal P) or some sh*t like that the other was, (someone yells out Remorse for P!). Yea, Remorse for P and the one that Un was on. I forgot the name of it but Unpachino was on it. (I Want Out).
HHLO: So are you featured on any joints on this project or what?
Havoc: Yea I rhymed on the one that Unpachino was on.
HHLO: Aight, that’s what it is man. So what else have you been doing with yourself personally, other than being on the P project man and what is your stance in this new era of Hip Hop?
Havoc: I mean I’m just continuing to work man, you know what I’m saying. I’m growing as an artist as well as a producer. You know I’m producing tracks for other artist, you know and I’m venturing off into other things.
HHLO: Another thing too man before I go on, I want to thank you for this little white chick named Kimmie. Man I met her around 98′ or 99′.
Havoc: Oh yea.
HHLO: Yea, yea, yea, she thought I was you man.
Havoc: (Laughing) Where was she from?
HHLO: She was out in Connecticut man. You got me some P** out in Connecticut man. She said I looked like Hav so I just ran with it.
Havoc: (laughing) So you just let it go?
HHLO: Damn right man. So I just wanted to thank you for that playa.
Havoc: No doubt.
HHLO: So what are you working on right now man, what projects do you have in the works?
Havoc: Well right now I’m working on the Havoc solo project.
HHLO: So you’re coming out with your first solo project then?
Havoc: Yea, well I put a little independent out like last year, but now I’m working on another one, and I’m out there producing some up and coming artist.
HHLO: So first off, you’re still rolling with G-Unit is that correct?
Havoc: Yea, yea, yea, you know G-Unit that’s my family, regardless of whatever it is, whether we’re on the label or not that’s family.
HHLO: Now what is your grind like trying to promote the solo project?
Havoc: A lot of intimate grinding you know, a lot of footwork. MySpace or whatever it is, it’s just a lot of foot work, you know.
HHLO: As far as album sales man, cause I talked to your homie 40 Glocc and he told me some of the ways that he is eating off of this game man with sales being down, so what is your expectation as far as album sales for your project?
Havoc: You know album sales is album sales, it is what it is, and it’s going to be what it’s going to be. A lot of ringtone things going on and you got to get it however you can get it.
HHLO: Bottom line man, on a side note you’re one of the most talented cat’s that came around, in the last 15 years, in my personal opinion. Your longevity speaks for itself. With the playing field being even, you don’t have to depend on anybody. You can put your music out there and do your numbers, I mean your music is well respected anyway and there are a lot of cats that would love to hear a Hav album man, but I didn’t even know you dropped a solo project. How did it fall under the radar like that man?
Havoc: Well it came out on a real small independent label man. They didn’t promote it, I didn’t promote it, I really didn’t want to. It was just something that I just did to pass the time, but it’s a timeless project so whenever you hear it you’ll hear it. But it wasn’t something that I went hard at on the promotional tip. But the new one that I’m going to put out I’m going to put my foot in it, and hopefully you’ll hear about this one….. Not hopefully, you will hear about this one.
HHLO: Yea and fu** all of the features man, we don’t need to hear Busta on this one man.
Havoc: Nah, nah I love Busta.
HHLO: Yea I respect Busta’s work too but you know what I’m saying.
Havoc: Yea, yea, but nah my album is not going to be a compilation it’s going to be Havoc.
HHLO: Yea because that’s what we are waiting for man because in the hood the solo sh**s that you scattered on the Mobb Deep albums have been classical joints man. I mean they kind of go unrecognized mainstream wise, and you’re kind of under rated lyrically, but one thing that most cats have always said through the years is how much you’ve stepped your game up man. And not trying to compare man but a lot of people say that you’ve surpassed P (Prodigy) Lyrically. Like on Murda Music you went hard. I feel that as a group you guys put out about 3 classic albums man
Havoc: Thank you man
HHLO: Hats off to you man, now with that said who do you feel are the top three Hip-Hop groups of all time?
Havoc: Top three Hip-Hop groups of all time? .Let me see. I would have to say Run DMC is in there, damn, uhh, Whodini and Mobb Deep
HHLO: So you put Whodini over Wu? Are you high?
Havoc: I got to put Wu-Tang in there my bad.
HHLO: Ahh, you’re being wish washy now man.
Havoc: Nah, nah not really
HHLO: Come on man so which one is it?
Havoc: Ahh man If I had to pick…
HHLO: Fu** Whodini man! He just said fu** Whodini ya know.
Havoc: (Laughing) Nah, nah I didn’t say that.
HHLO: Ahhh come on Hav, them ni***s is washed up anyway, come on man, come on Hav Ni**a just said fu** Whodini.
Havoc: Nah, but yea I forgot I got to put Wu-Tang in there. Wu-Tang, Run DMC, and Mobb Deep
HHLO: There it go, so are you working with any other artist as far as doing production for other artist or what?
Havoc: Yea I’m working with a lot of up and coming artist that people may not know right now until they come out, but I’m doing a lot of work out there.
HHLO: Aight that’s what it is man. Throw some names out there so we can look out for them it’s about promotions, promote these ni***s.
Havoc: Well I just did a track for this new Group called The Day. They are going to shoot a video for it soon. It’s going to be their single. And a lot of other artist ya’ll hear about it just stay tuned.
HHLO: So when is P expected to come out do you know?
Havoc: I have no idea, but I definitely anticipate his return and I hope the he comes home shortly.
HHLO: So will we get another Mobb album?
Havoc: All day, all day.
HHLO: What about the new G-Unit project are you featured on that or what’s popping with that?
Havoc: Uh well right now their working on the new G-Unit album right now. I’m trying to get some tracks up on there, but who knows, but I’m behind the project 100% no matter what.
