Feature Mixtape: Yelawolf “Trunk Muzik”

The country white rapper persona is nothing new to hip hop. In the beginning of the last decade, Bubba Sparxxx debuted to much critical acclaim with that redneck style and heart-felt lyrics. Later, Paul Wall caught the people’s attention with a mouthful of diamonds and one of the most polished flows in the game. Now, Yelawolf, the self-described “Skateboarder, Rapper, Drinker”, puts out Trunk Muzik and shows why he deserves his spot. On the first track “Trunk Muzik”, Yelawolf presents everything we love about Southern rap. The slow flow, double time spit, references to characters like ‘catfish billy’ and unnecessarily dramatic beats that end up feeling so necessary. In terms of content, one thing you’ll notice about Yela is that he’s more MC than lyricist. The rhymes lack complexity but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

On “Good to Go”, he attacks the beat with a dizzyingly aggressive performance and manages to hold his own with OG Bun B. On “Pop the Trunk”, he avoids making empty threats and instead tells true stories about how his dad would deal with barn robbers. “Speak Her Sex” is a song for the ladies that doesn’t seem forced or corny. It’s backed by a catchy hook and some of the freshest production you’ll hear from the South.

The mixtape is called Trunk Muzik but the Alabama MC really shows off his versatility on this one, successfully crafting music for every situation. If he continues to use impressive production, align himself with serious artists (Juelz on “Mixin up the Medicine” and Raekwon on “I Wish”), Yelawolf will be a serious problem in 2010.
