Redman and Method Man’s Blackout LP came out in 1999. To get a sense of how long ago that was, peep “Where We At” from that album and let Redman welcome you to Side Two of a cassette. Remember those? Since then, the dynamic duo have been mostly hit and miss, sometimes dragging their good name through the mud with singles like “Dirty”. Now that Blackout 2 (BO2) is on the way and fans anticipate their return to greatness, DJ Green Lantern provides the streets with the pre-album the Lights Out mixtape.
Dj Green Lantern’s Lights Out is a collection of fan favorites from Red and Meth juxtaposed with a few new cuts from BO 2. However, without prior knowledge of their work, you could not tell the difference. The first two tracks, “Dangerous MCs” and “Big Dogs” sound like tracks from the same album, even though they were recorded a decade apart. Normally, this would mean they haven’t grown as artists. However, when you compare their old hits to their more recent projects, a little reverse-progress Benjamin Button action is not a bad look.
The blunt aficionados know how to please their fans. On the small window of what’s to come on BO2, they grab Pete Rock for production and go to UGK and Wu-members Raekwon & Ghostface for features. Lyrically, they bring that raw and off the wall style, with Red spitting lines like “cold, my heart built with a snowball, and i fuck old women like Zohan”, and Meth talking about “another mic, another night in the day’s inn, another heist another kite in the state pen, my state been the shit, ya’ll dudes just break wind”.
Picks from their older catalogue were also solid choices. They avoided putting all the obvious singles and went with lesser known gems. This should bring long time supporters back while encouraging newly acquainted fans to go back and discover Red and Meth. The only real complaint is for Green Lantern leaving out the intro for “The Rockwilder”. It’s a minor detail but that opening is too classic. Ohhmygod…
Get the mixtape. Get familiar (or nostalgic). Then, go get the album.
