Name: Rich Jones

Location: Chicago, IL

Age: 21

Member: Secular Citizen

Status: Unsigned

Affiliations: Sec Citizen, Krypton Flo, Savant, Longshot

Bio: Don’t let Rich Jones’s façade fool you… He’s a true emcee.  A resident of Chicago, Jones is a man making moves.  He is the lead member of his rap duo, Secular Citizen, and has been featured at many venues in the Chicago land area, including The Spoken Word Café, The Loft, and many college showcases.  He has featured some of the midwest’s top underground artists on his tracks, namely Krypton Flo and Longshot.  A student at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, Jones has also partnered with Savant of the group Rarebreed for a few tight collaborations.  With his fellow Sec Citizen member Swords The Ronin, Jones is currently lobbying for a spot at Lollapalooza this coming summer, a 3-day music festival in downtown Chicago that has hosted the likes of Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco, Gnarls Barkley and The Cool Kids among others.

Jones’s tracks do not receive much publicity, but his lyrics are true to his origins, and are crafted deftly to fit the many styles of instrumentals that he raps on.  His range of topics includes everything from the most basic party songs to reflections about society and God.  His group Sec Citizen is on the verge of releasing their first album, and though their brand of music isn’t exactly “street certified,” it is thought provoking and innovative.

Strange’s Opinion: Rich Jones’s myspace may not have as many views as PreZZure’s, and he may not have the same kind of venue exposure as PreZZure, but don’t assume anything based on popularity.  Take a listen to both PreZZure’s “Yahalreadykno” and Jones’s “Time to Collect.”  Jones certainly knows his way around the bars, and his rhyme scheme and originality are evident in every verse.  Rich Jones is another classic example of a rapper who possesses true talent, and yet is denied credit because of how much his music differentiates from that of the main stream.

Name: Prezzure

Location: Woodside, NY

Member: Solo Artist

Age: Unknown

Status: Signed, Live 4 the Pen, Die By the Wordz Records

Affiliations: Live 4 the Pen, Die By the Wordz

Bio: Yet another self-proclaimed “Hot emcee comin’ outta Brooklyn,” artist PreZZure has already established himself on a local level.  Currently a student at Laguardia Community University of New York, PreZZure has performed at virtually every underground venue for rappers numerous times, including Sin Sin in Manhattan, Five Spot in Brooklyn, Rebel in Manhattan and Terraza 7 in Queens.  He has also performed at New Paltz University in Upstate NY and at City College in Manhattan.

PreZZure says it is his mission to get his music “heard around the world, and be a chapter in Hip Hop’s book.”  His music is respectfully outside of the mainstream, his subject matters pertaining to everything form the club to the troubles of poverty.  PreZZure seeks to establish himself amongst the greatest emcees.

Strange’s Opinion:  I’ve listened to a variety of tracks off of “Penny 4 My Thoughts, Dollar 4 My Dreams,” which is PreZZure’s first album, and it’s a solid first effort.  His singles clearly lack the production power of many mainstream artists, but I wouldn’t expect to hear PreZZure over a Just Blaze composition or anything like that.  Though at times his flow is a bit shaky with punch line delivery, I have respect for the fact that he’s making music that’s clearly outside the box.  Listen to “Yahalreadykno,” the single off of PreZZure’s first album, for a good example of what he’s capable of.  If you like what you hear on that track, then throw him your vote.

    Is there even a competition?
Rich is obviously a lot more clever with his words, and his song is wayyy more catchy.

  3. nY718 says:

  4. YoMain says:

this was obviously not a fair match up. like an 11 year old boy and a veteran NAVY seal. RJ all the WAY.

  5. Rob K says:

This was pretty one sided. Beat wise, Rich’s is more captivating and definitely makes you want to listen more. Yahalreadykno had some decent lyrics, but to be honest, the delivery takes away too much from the content. Rich’s delivery and overall microphone presence define his dominance in this matchup and really exude the stature of an experienced MC.

  6. PreZZure says:

    lol @ the comments…

    iVoted for Rich…Dope Tune

  7. OgeeGollyWiz says:

It seems to me RJ got all his buddies on here to make comments. These comments are moronic, and the one who tried to sound intelligent, hahaha your funny.

WTF is so catchy about RJ’s track, it sounds boring and doesn’t stand out at all to me. Personally it provided great bowel movement stimulation :)

    Have a nice day!

  8. Rich Jones says:

    Props to PreZZure, yahalreadyknow haha

  14. sad really says:

i sincerely doubt over 3,000 people know either of these artists.

someone is probably clicking a artist name and refreshing the page a million times.

there both mediocre and young with some potential to become a better artist.

as for this being a “underground online battle” they don’t sound “underground”.

mf doom, immortal tech, tech n9ne, that’s “underground”

  15. agentdhh says:

Actually sad really in a lot of peoples eyes underground is anything that’s not mainstream so this fits perfectly. Aren’t they all the same? Joell Ortiz, Joe Buddens, Skyzoo…they’re all underground. You don’t have to be Murs or Evidence to be underground.

  16. sad really says:

    agent,

this doesn’t “fit perfectly” with anything they’re both amateurs.

because there not “mainstream” doesn’t make them “underground”

there probably just some online wannabe artists.

    not underground artist.

  17. agentdhh says:

My point was this…Rich Jones has a following of over 2000 people in his online facebook group, so I can see those votes from him. If he was just a online wannabe artist, then he wouldn’t have that. I can get you the link shortly if you want to see it. And Prezzure has been covered daily almost for the last week and a half on OnSmash.com, and really I would think OnSmash isn’t just going to throw up anyone that submits. Maybe I’m wrong. I’ve checked into both before I voted. While I agree this isn’t the best battle that HHLO has done, I will say that it’s been the most dramatic. And there is definitly something to be said about their hunger.

While they may have some work to do to contend with the big dogs, I give them props for their effort. Their young give them time, and if and when they make it bigger than what we all expect, we may be eating our words.

But you are right, a generalized statement like “fits perfectly” was wrong. I could have been clearer in my response.

  18. sad really says:

    agent,

2000 facebook friends + onsmash posts = wannabe online rappers.

these next generation artists don’t live outside of their keyboards.

when the streets start saying their names i bother to take another listen.
