Those bigger than 6×8 will need a foundation because of their size alone, as it needs stability, but those smaller are generally fine on flat ground, or even on level pavement slabs. The risks of not providing a foundation include possible leaks because the pieces might not fit together as well, having a crooked structure, and, in some cases, the warranty can be voided if you choose to skip adding a solid and level base.
