In February we announced a new global collaboration with Sparrows Group with an aim to support and accelerate industry access to their leading brand of crane and lifting operations training. We are now delighted to announce the appointment of Trevor Dear to the role of Subject Matter Expert – Crane Training and Development for the global roll out of this.
Trevor has over 2 decades of offshore crane operations experience, has been a senior offshore crane instructor/assessor for Sparrows and for the past 5-years has been the technical authority for all of Sparrows’ crane training programmes.
This new position will see Trevor support the establishment of Sparrows Crane and Lifting Centre’s of Excellence at multiple RelyOn Nutec facilities worldwide, with overall responsibility for technical assurance and quality control of all crane training material, the development of instructors and assessors, and the introduction of crane simulation and remote training capabilities within the venture.
As a global role across all of RelyOn Nutec’s and Sparrows’ training centres, Trevor will expand the crane training products and services on offer in all regions and will look to introduce O&G benchmark safety standards to other sectors, including maritime, renewables and more.
Trevor’s offshore career began back in 1996 and in his role of crane operator over the years, he has gained invaluable experience and knowledge on a range of global installations including semi-submersibles, FPSO’s and production platforms. It was Trevor’s initial experiences undertaking crane operator training that sparked his passion for learning and development and when a role opened up at Sparrows, he jumped at the opportunity to work for an organisation which is widely considered to be industry leading in lifting and crane operations. He first joined their ad-hoc offshore crew the Flying Squad, before progressing into an instructor/assessor position and then to Training Centre Supervisor in 2015.
During his time at Sparrows, Trevor identified gaps in emergency scenario training and has been instrumental in designing and producing new courses, such as Emergency Crane Operations and Reaction and Awareness training, many of which have since been recognised as industry standards.
With a background that firmly establishes him as a technical authority of crane and lifting operations, Trevor is ideally suited to drive the joint initiative we’ve launched with Sparrows. This is a very challenging role which will see Sparrows’ world leading skills and knowledge aligned to our training and competence management systems, expertise and global presence, and will ensure that this safety critical training can be delivered where it is needed most.
Talking about his new role, Trevor says, “I’m really looking forward to getting started in this position to support the advancement of safe and technically competent crane operations across all regions and sectors. We cannot put a price on the safety of personnel and I’m excited to work with both RelyOn Nutec and Sparrows in developing a new generation of safety conscious and competent crane operators.
