A Training Needs Analysis (TNA) is a review of learning and development needs within an organisation. It considers the knowledge, skill and behaviours that people need and how to develop them effectively. In order to deliver appropriate and effective training which meets the needs of individuals and the organisation, and represent value for money, a TNA is essential.  TNA can cover organisation wide training needs including future skill requirements, role or task-based TNA to define specific training related to the role or task. The TNA process establishes a benchmark of required knowledge, skills and behaviour required at specific levels which can then be used to assess gaps and identify required training pathways.

EXPERTise 2.0 is an innovative online tool, that quickly assesses and establishes the technical capability of people performing high consequence roles across the energy industry.

A product of a decade of University research and industry trials, EXPERTise targets specific operational contexts and comparing performance of technical capabilities against a representative database, EXPERTise provides evidence-based, reportable outcomes that informs training effectiveness, upskilling programs, organisational baselines, team selection, and ensures equitable recruitment decisions.

Designed specifically for various roles such as power systems controllers, field and substation high voltage switching operations and wind farm technicians, this diagnostic tool, called EXPERTise 2.0, has been crafted over 15 years, by organisational psychologists at Macquarie University. It has undergone rigorous testing both in laboratory and real-world environments, demonstrating a relationship between higher performance on EXPERTise 2.0 and improved operational performance, along with reduced mental workload.

How does it work?

Our approach is to assess "markers" of technical skill using a series of carefully curated scenarios that combine to build a profile. These markers include the capability to:

1. Recognise task-related conditions
2. Associate different task-related conditions
3. Prioritise information acquisition to explain task-related conditions
4. Identify task-related conditions
5. Discriminate relevant from non-relevant issues in responding to task-related conditions.

EXPERTise uses a database of de-identified real-world performance from experienced practicioners (for a defined role) that establishes a baseline against which to assess individuals. This provides an evidence-based evaluation of a candidate’s performance. As the database is constantly updating its benchmarks, it retains accurate markers for contemporary use.

How is it used?

We are deploying EXPERTise as an online diagnostic tool. Candidates access the platform and follow the prompts to complete a series of evaluations and tasks. Each evaluation has been developed and tested by industry to ensure realistic and relevant scenarios.

EXPERTise develops a report of individual performance against the tasks. This involves detailed text reports that augment graphs describing the performance of the candidate. These comprehensive reports based on established 'norms', provide insights into an individual's expected expertise level given their experience.

Initially, RelyOn will incorporate EXPERTise into its High Voltage training programs for participants undertaking switching in the field, substations and wind farms. It will also be used to support safety training initiatives, enabling educators to target specific areas for development.
